Excuses

“Be stronger than your excuses.” – Unknown
Everyone has an excuse for something.
Why they are late is a big one. Did you oversleep? Just say so.
Don’t make up a Law and Order: SVU episode-length excuse. Just be honest.
Excuses become some people’s reasons not to do anything. Or almost nothing anyway.
They put off until the next millennium what they should have done 3 weeks ago, and always with an excuse or multiple ones. And they don’t seem to think you’re smart enough to see through all of it.
But you are.
Stroke survivors and their recovery rely on the truth. Not stories and conjecture about nonsense.
When you commit to being there to take them to an appointment, or grocery shopping, or whatever you’ve agreed to be there for, show up.
Don’t wait until 9:59 am when you’re supposed to be there at 10, to tell them you aren’t coming because your dog hid the car keys. They are counting on you.
I’m alive because my friend called me back.
He could have waited and called when it was more convenient or whatever the situation was, but he said he’d call. He knew he should, and he saved my life. He called in the middle of my stroke and was able to get EMTs to my house to help me, even though he was in LA.
No excuses.
When people promise you they’ll show up, hold them to it.
Of course, there will be an emergency or something from time to time that will change your plans.
They just need to tell you the truth. No excuses.
